What Is a Root Canal?

A tooth infection can cause severe dental sensitivity and if left untreated may need extraction. Root canal therapy, or a root canal for short, is a surgical procedure in which the infected dental pulp inside the tooth is removed. This eliminates both the bacteria causing the decay and the resulting pain.

Anesthetic

One of our skilled restorative dentists will provide a local anesthetic to ensure you are teeth and gums are numb before beginning the dental procedure.

Preparation

Once you are comfortable, the dentist will create a small hole in the affected tooth to expose the inner pulp.

Extraction

We extract the decayed pulp using a canal file. The dentist disinfects the inner structure by flushing the canal with a sterile solution and may apply a topical antibiotic if necessary.

Sealant

After the area is sterilized, it is sealed with an inert rubber-like substance to fill and provide support to the canal. Depending on the condition of your tooth, we may wait a few days for the infection to clear before securing the finishing touches.

Dental Crown

If your natural tooth structure is severely weakened, we often recommend capping it with a dental crown. The dentist takes impressions of your teeth to design a custom restoration and secures the crown to the outer surface of your enamel.

Dental Care after a Root Canal

After root canal treatment, the dentists will provide detailed instructions for recovery and maintenance.

Pain Management

You may experience some dental sensitivity and swelling in the first few days after your root canal. We recommend taking some over the counter pain relievers to mitigate side effects.

Antibiotics

The dentist may prescribe antibiotics after the procedure to completely eliminate bacterial infection. Take these as prescribed even if your symptoms have subsided.

Maintaining Your Restoration

Caring for your tooth after treated with a crown or filling is very simple. Practice good oral hygiene brushing and flossing daily, and attend your biannual check-up at the dentist's office.
